WHAT IS A TINCTURE
Tinctures are concentrated herbal extracts made from plants and used as traditional herbal remedies. They are typically taken orally to support various health concerns or used preventively to promote overall well-being. Herbal tinctures offer several advantages as a form of medicinal preparation.
They have a long shelf life because the alcohol acts as a natural preservative, allowing them to last for years without losing potency. Alcohol also has the unique ability to extract certain beneficial compounds that water or oil alone cannot, making tinctures more potent and complete.
Herbal tinctures are highly concentrated, so even a small amount delivers a strong dose of the plant’s beneficial constituents. Their liquid form allows the body to absorb active plant compounds more quickly than teas or capsules, providing faster effects. Additionally, tinctures allow for precise dosage and can be taken directly, diluted in cold or warm water, or added to food and drinks, making them a versatile and convenient option for herbal use.
The process of making a tincture is simple yet unique. Over 40 days, the herbs are infused in food-grade alcohol and shaken daily to fully extract their active compounds. After this period, the plants are removed, and the tincture is ready for use.
Did you know that in ancient alchemy, herbalists believed that distilling plants with alcohol captured the essence or most vital qualities of the plant? They called this distilled liquid the “spirit” of the plant, which is why most alcoholic beverages are known as spirits.
